1996年10月25日是水产学院(山大水产系、海院水产系)半百华诞,学院特举行“面向21世纪水产科学发展学术研讨会”等活动.自1946年创建水产学院的前身——山东大学水产系以来,水产学院己发展到3个系、7个专业、2个研究院所、1个海水养殖试验场、1个国家级重点学科、2个博士点、4个硕士点、l个国家教委开放实验室、1个省重点实验室,国家海洋药物工程技术研究中心的建设也己进入实施阶段.在校学生近600人,其中硕士、博士研究生100余人;教职工128人,其中教授24人(含博士生导师7人)、副教授31人.由于学校的迅速发展,己于1996年1月通过了国家重点发展高等教育的“2ll工程”预审,并开始实施“2ll工程”建设.
