The relationship between the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the microvessel density (MVD) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and adjacent noncancerous liver tissues was studied by immunohistochemistry. The positive rate of VEGF in paracancer liver tissue was higher than that in HCC (85.4% vs.66.7%; P <0.05), and there was no significant difference in the expression of VEGF between the two groups (P> 0 .0 5). The positive signals were mainly located in the cytoplasm of cancer cells, para-cancerous liver cells and vascular endothelial cells. The MV density in HCC was significantly higher than that in adjacent noncancerous liver tissue (P <0.01), and increased with the degree of differentiation of cancer cells. The results suggest that VEGF is not the only factor that stimulates MV in the development of HCC. MV density may be more meaningful than VEGF protein in judging the prognosis and biological behavior of HCC
