独立生活中心是一个提高残疾人独立生活能力的社区组织。传统上这些以社区为基础的服务中心并没有建立与医疗保健组织的正式联系,但其提供的服务又是与医疗保健相关的项目,其中有些中心组织为残疾人提供技术上的帮助;有的提供个人的辅助服务;有的组织聘用一批医疗保健工作者如护士、专业的治疗师为其工作。还有的为残疾人改造环境以满足他们的需求。这些服务都是广大残疾人维持健康生活所必需的。
The Independent Living Center is a community organization that promotes the ability of disabled people to live independently.
