液体密封垫料的密封作用机理与固体垫片的密封机理是完全不同的。根据涂覆后物态的变化,它的密封作用的好坏应与垫料的流体力学和弹性力学变化有关。由于它绝大部分是以有机高分子化合物作为基料,有机溶剂为稀释剂,再加有适当的填料和添加剂所构成。故其使用温度和对介质的稳定性,主要取决于该垫料所用基料的耐热性和耐介质性。高分子材料为基料的密封垫料,当受热温度超过高分子材料的软化点或分解温度,该种垫料也就失去密封作用。从现有国内外液体垫料商品中所含耐高温的高分子材料而论:硅橡胶、氟橡胶、硅氟橡胶为基料的密封垫料使用温度最高,但也低于300℃。而近代技术的发展要求能耐
