Objective: To study the effect of heavy metal lead on female reproductive system, and to analyze the correlation between lead content and the rate of oocyte retrieval, egg maturity, normal fertilization rate, normal cleavage rate, transplanting embryo rate, high quality embryo rate and pregnancy rate. Methods: The concentrations of lead in follicular fluid of 36 patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) were measured. The follicle count, ovulation rate, egg maturation rate, normal fertilization rate and development of these patients were observed. Results: There was no significant difference in the rate of oocyte retrieval, egg maturation, normal fertilization rate, normal cleavage rate, transplanting embryo rate, high quality embryo rate and detection of lead in follicular fluid. But with the increasing of lead concentration, Egg maturation rate, normal cleavage rate, high-quality embryo rates have a downward trend. Conclusion: Lead in heavy metals is toxic to the female reproductive system. However, due to the small sample size in this study, there is no significant correlation between the two.
