上海交通职业技术学院于2001年由原上海港务局海港职工大学和上海交运集团职工大学合并转型组建而成。学院于2014年7月划转上海市教委,市教委与上海交运集团股份有限公司、上海国际港务(集团)股份有限公司共同签订了《共建协议书》,三方将共同推进学院的建设发展。目前,学院是上海市特色高职院建设单位,发展定位是建成一所“特色化、集团化、多元化”的上海标杆性特色高职,在全市的职业教育中具有示范、引领、辐射作用:学院汽车运用与维修技术专业以及物流管理专业既是上海市“085”重点建设专业,也是学院交通物流专业群中的特色品牌专业,是学院开设最早、实力最强的专业。
