In the past decade, Japanese companies have not gained a high place in the software, Internet, biotechnology and other rapidly growing industries. Japan does not have the same business as Microsoft, Google or eBay. Its entire software industry has not impressed the world. Although some Japanese pharmaceutical companies have already developed some lucrative drugs, Japanese companies are still lagging behind in terms of biotechnology and medical equipment. Japan did not succeed because of a lack of attempts. Japan still holds a leading position in research and development. It invests 3.2% of its GDP in research and development, compared with 2.6% in the United States and 2% in the EU. In Western countries, government and university laboratories are places where the most recent breakthroughs are generated, while research and development in Japan are more often conducted within large companies.
