墨子思想的核心是利之所生、利之开源，兴利除害是墨子“兼爱”思想的出发点。兴利与除害，兴利是重点，兴利的具体途径是交相利，而交相利又必须以兼相爱为前提，交相利所依据的原则是“投我以桃，报之以李”。墨子是小工商业者的代言人，其交相利的思想正是小工商业者阶层安身立命的现实生活原则，但这种带有功利性特点的思想有别于现代功利主义。
