《新蜀山剑侠传》游戏推出不久之后,厂商决定推出蜀山外传游戏《蜀山外传:紫青劫》,可能是《新蜀山剑侠传》在市场上热卖的原因,现在再接再厉制作《蜀山外传:紫青劫》来满足玩者。《新蜀山剑侠传》是齐金蝉和朱文皆孩童时代的故事,而外传游戏是承继《新蜀山剑侠传》的剧情而发展,故事发生在齐金蝉和朱文皆已经成年的数年后,一对在前世本为情侣的邓英及姚纤,在今世将再续未了情,外传会比《新蜀山剑侠传》游戏着重爱情的元素,不过游戏仍以充满奇幻怪异的蜀山为背景,内容仍是以斩妖除魔为主和调查灵异事件作为旅程。
