Abstract:Marriage is not only a contract between the wife and husband, but also a lifetime promise. Ideas of marriage are different from person to person. Some people get married for property, some for admiration, some for sexual desire, some for true love.
Key words: marriage; love; money; desire
1. Introduction
Pride and Prejudice is one of Jane Austen's masterpieces. She disclosed middle-class young ladies' different ideas of marriage through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls dealt with their marriage problems. This shows the writer's idea of love and marriage: it's wrong to get married just for property and status, while so is it without caring about those elements. Marriage should be based on true love.
2. The Basis of Marriage
The basis of marriage should be true love. The union of Charlotte and Mr.Collins was the most realistic. Charlotte cared about nothing but money in her marriage. No matter how stupid Mr.Collins was, she had a rich life she had wished for invariably. From my perspective, this is not the ideal marriage. Charlotte indeed got enough money, but marriage didn't bring for her happiness, enjoyment. Because she did not love Mr.Collins at all. Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy loved each other from the bottom of their hearts. At first, Mr.Darcy looked down upon Elizabeth . Elizabeth held prejudice against Mr.Darcy because of his pride and Mr.Wickham's bad words against him. She did not love him when he proposed to her at the first time,so she turned down his proposal. However, when they got to know each other and made some changes for each other, they fell in love. Their marriage was based on true love, which was considered the ideal one.
3. The Importance of Money
In addition to true love, money plays an important role in marriage. Money can provide true love with sunshine and nutrition. The point can be explained by the first sentence of the book "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife ". Mr.Collins was so ridiculous that no girls would like him. But he was rich, which still attracted many girls. Although to some extent, they may not be very happy, at least they did not have to worry about food, clothing, housing transportation and other basic necessities of life. Colonel Fitzwilliam was beyond comparison the most pleasant man. He admired Elizabeth and Elizabeth also had ever planned her marrying Colonel Fitzwilliam. His situation in life was most eligible, but to counterbalance these advantages, Mr.Darcy had lots of money, and he could have none at all. Between Mr.Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam, she chose Mr.Darcy. Money was also a very important factor even for Elizabeth, who firmly believed the basis of marriage was true love. 4. The Relationship between True Love and Money
True love and money both are necessary in a happy marriage. As the saying goes, "Economic basis determines the superstructure ". When the only thing on one person's mind is whether he or she can get enough to eat, he or she will not be in the mood to love someone sincerely. On the contrary, if one person does not love his wife or her husband, there is no meaning even though the one has a lot of money. However, in modern society, many people twist the relation between true and money. Take the gold diggers for example. They prefer to cry in a BMW rather than smile on a bicycle. The only thing they care about is money. If people have lots of money, but are not happy, what is the point of having money Of course, we have to admit that money plays an important role in marriage. If a couple are very poor, they are not happy, either.
5. Conclusion:
It is important to keep the balance between true love and money in marriage. The basis of marriage should be true love. True love can help them overcome difficulties in their future life. Money provides guarantees for a happy marriage.
