清末民初北方地区的戏曲改良活动,大致经历了三个阶段。第一个阶段是1906-1907年田际云、崔灵芝编演改良新戏带动的第一波改良浪潮。此前几年中,北方地区报纸经常发表鼓吹戏曲改良的言论,但戏曲界响应者寥寥;1906年惠兴女士殉学事件在京津地区成为一大社会新闻,又时值教育救国的学界风潮涌动,素有新思想的田际云、崔灵芝遂以名伶身份先后编演反映当时社会热点问题的时装新戏《惠兴女士传》、《女子爱国》,在社会各界引起广泛反响,也为北方戏曲界带来了新的风气,推动了戏曲改良活动的高涨。
