从元伦理学的概念、元伦理学与描述伦理学和规范伦理学的关系、以及元伦理学的产生和发展等几个方面可以看出,元伦理学是退后一步或站到另一个层面上追究规范伦理学背后的问题,其核心问题在于道德判断是否具有有效性或具有何种意义上的有效性,追究该问题有各种不同的进路:语义分析进路、心灵哲学进路、本体论进路和认识论进路,因此,元伦理学并非只是对道德语词的语义分析。
