箴言诗,英文名称gnomes(或称gnomic poetry),这个词来自希腊文,意谓一种措词简洁、表现某个普通真理的短诗.这个定义与谚语(Proverbs)并无二致.从某种意义上可以说,箴言诗是从谚语发展起来的一种诗歌样式.它的作者通常都有借用谚语的创作成果的倾向.但谚词是属于民间创作的,具有集体性的基本特征,而箴言诗虽然吸收了民间谚语的养份,却并不必然属于集体创作.形式上,谚语采取“语”的形式(有时押韵)往往只有一二句;箴言诗采取“诗”的形式,且有一定的篇幅.
