Malaria and Anemia Some stages of the life cycle of Plasmodium develop within the red blood cells, so patients have varying degrees of hemolysis. However, it is difficult to estimate the incidence of anemia. In 121 malaria patients, Miller et al. (1972) found anemia in 26 patients. The mean duration of hospitalization for this complication was 28.6 days. These patients are the first to develop the disease, indicating that their anemia occurred before immunity was acquired. Clinically, people living in high malaria areas, especially children, have a high rate of anemia. Although there are several causes of such anemia, the role of malaria in its pathogenesis has been well documented. Some people think that some mechanisms are the cause of anemia in malaria
