This article reveals the sorrows of women in that era by attaching importance to obeying men through the study of the feminine conversations in two short stories by Ernest Hemingway, Cat in the Rain and Mountains Like White Elephants. The heroines of the two novels both rebelled, and the wife of the “Rain Cat” revolted straightforwardly; while the girls in the White Elephants Mountains follow the traditional mode of communication, expressing their own opposition in a reserved and restrained manner.
