The great Battle of Gettysburg lasted three days in July 1863 in and around the streets of this Pennsylvania town. This battle is a turning point in the civil war. The Congress decided to make this piece of the battlefield, where many heroic soldiers had died, built into a national cemetery. President Lincoln personally came from Washington to hold an opening ceremony for this cemetery. His short essay, delivered on November 19, 1863, is one of the most eloquent and dramatic of all interpreting democratic beliefs.
