In 1955, the Australian government held an international design competition to build the Sydney Opera House. An improvised sketch landscape by the young Danish architect Jorn Utzon (1918—) shows an extremely rich imagination and expressiveness. He was inspired by the beautiful Sydney Harbour landscape and designed the exterior image of the opera house into three giant shells, which are magnificent and novel. This design was one of the 233 projects that participated in the competition, and it was recognized as the “most vivid and most exciting architectural image of the city since the 20th century.”
