2,4-Dichloronitrobenzene was reacted with methyl malonate in DMF suspended in NaH to give 3-chloro-4- (dimethoxycarbonyl) methylnitrobenzene in 75% yield. The methyl group of this intermediate can be further alkylated to yield a compound with two ester groups remaining. The yield of 7 is more than 70%.
