Western dinner
Bread
Starter/Appetizer: Salad or Soup
Main Course: The most common main course would be beef, chicken, fish or pasta.
Coffee and Dessert: After the main course, the table is cleared and coffee and dessert are served. Dessert is usually something sweet such as ice cream, cake, cookies or fruit. This is normally the very last course.
Chinese dinner
Tea
Starter/Appetizer: Chinese starters are normally cold dishes. Main materials in Chinese starters can be either vegetables or meat that has been cooked and then cooled down.
Main course: The main course that Chinese people refer to are not dishes, but rice or noodles. In a big dinner with a lot of dishes, people may not be able to eat much rice after having many kinds of dishes, but people normally would still have a small bowl of rice or noodles.
Soup: Chinese soups are served after main dishes.
Dessert: The most common dessert in Chinese dinners is fruit. The favorable fruits are watermelon and pears.
Serving dishes
One of the biggest differences between Chinese and western dinners might be how dishes are served.
In western dinners, dishes are served on each person’s own plate. Each person uses a big plate. Dishes are put on each plate before serving. In western restaurants, everyone orders the three courses for themselves. In Chinese dinners, dishes are served at the middle of the table for all to share, and each person uses a small plate in front him or her to hold the food. Food is taken from the plates at the center of the table and placed onto one’s own plate during the course of the meal. Sometimes people eat directly from the main plate.
Chicken breast or chicken necks / feet
There are some other interesting differences between Chinese and western food culture.
In western supermarkets, chicken breast is the most expensive part of the chicken. Chicken feet and necks are just thrown away and never sold in the supermarkets.
However, in China, people regard that meat being close to bones as more tasty than a big piece of meat. Some Chinese people prefer eating the chicken meat from the necks and feet. This meat is sometimes more expensive than chicken breast.
