传统美德作为传统道德文化的精华，在中国社会发展和中华民族历史进程中起了重要作用。其传统美德主要是：爱国爱民的社会责任感；不畏强暴自强不息的民族气节；笃志好学奋发有为的理想抱负；见利思义以义制利的价值取向；仁爱孝悌尊老爱幼的人伦意识；忠诚老实严守信用的诚信品质；立身重廉、廉洁奉公的廉耻观；勤劳节俭俭以养德的生活态度；尊师重教珍视人才的社会风尚；尊道贵德修身践履的重德传统。弘扬传统文化对建设有中国特色的社会主义道德文化，增进民族凝聚力，培养“四有”新人都有重要意义。
