When I visited the mine, I found the water in the pit was reddish brown. Why? This turns out to be related to microorganisms in the ore. In nature, some microorganisms (mostly acidophilus) feed on ores. For example, some bacteria can grow and multiply with pyrite and produce brown-red iron hydroxide so the water in the pit turns brownish red. I have a strong interest in this type of microorganism that “eats” stones and wants to learn more about them through experimentation and finding information. Culturing microorganisms I first collected some bacteria from pit water and then used lean ore or tailings containing pyrite as support
