Engineering Research Center Co., Ltd. (now known as C-FER Technology Co., Ltd.), New Demonstration Engineering Co., Ltd. and more than 39 oil extraction companies and suppliers in a joint group company, spent 6 years to develop and test a well Water separation (DHOWS) process, which consists of a hydrocyclone and a common pumping unit. By the end of 1996, a total of 18 mine tests were completed under various conditions from ESP, PCP and rod pump systems. In the initial application of ESP prototypes, the water yield was reduced by 97%. The water-oil ratio generally dropped to below 2 or below 2 for liquids discharged to the surface. This paper briefly summarizes the completed field tests and key deliverables; including increases in oil production, decreases in water production, predicted increases in oil recovery, and general factors that affect the implementation of downhole oil separation systems. This article discusses the issues that have been solved, together with the applications and challenges of the future potential of the solution. It can be predicted that in the aspect of water management, the application of downhole oil-water separation technology will soon change the status quo in the industry related to this.
