I. INTRODUCTION After attending the Tenth International Vacuum Conference (Baltimore, USA), we visited the headquarters of the National Standards Institute (NBS) in Fort Myers, and paid special attention to the vacuum measurement room of the benchmark center. We met with the responsible officials of International Mr. L. Brady, Deputy Director of Operations, and Dr. CF Tilford, Head of Vacuum Metering Unit. The headquarters of Fortescue covers an area of 765 acres and has 26 buildings. The 208-acre NBS Boulder Division consists of 14 buildings with a total population of 2,700 and annual expenses of about $ 200 million. Vacuum gauging at NBS was cut back in the early 1970s and then restarted in 1980. Since the 1980s, there has been a rapid development, with a high level, in the international vacuum gauge has a greater impact. Dr. C. Tilford is the chair of the group responsible for the International Comparisons of the Low Pressure (1-10 Pascals) section of the International Bureau of Metrology (BIPM).
