On January 28, 1992, Japan’s Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (OITDA) released the results of a survey conducted by Japan’s optoelectronics industry in fiscal year 1991 (ending March 31, 1992). Optical components, optical equipment and systems, and optical transmission systems totaled 3.766 trillion yen (29.8 billion U.S. dollars), an increase of 18% over the 3.169 trillion yen the year before (pictured). The Association surveyed 389 enterprises in the industry and collected the latest data, of which 138 were answered (see table). In its long-term business plan announced two years ago by the Association, it is estimated that in 1995 Japan’s total output value will amount to 9,000 billion yen (72 billion U.S. dollars) and 16.2 billion yen in 2000. Optoelectronics It is estimated that the output value of optoelectronic components in fiscal year 1991 reached 362 billion yen, an increase of 21% over the previous year. Including fiber (including fiber optic cable) is expected to achieve 11 billion yen, an increase of 11%; light detectors (including array detectors) increased 23% to 134 billion yen; hybrid optics increased 18%; display components (such as plasma Body show
