虽然“主旋律”这个概念首见于1987年,然而,早在新中国成立的那一刻,中国的主旋律电影便已应运而生。新中国成立以来,中国主旋律电影先后走过了“十七年”、“文革”时期和1976年至1987年复苏发展的艰难道路。随后,又经历了从被受众和市场拒斥到新世纪被逐渐认可的曲折历程。随着时代政治背景的变化和文化多元格局的出现,在当今艺术电影、商业电影和主旋律电影三分天下的中国电影生态环境下,“主旋律”电影的内涵和外延均发生了奇妙的“意义旅行”现象。
