Hughes has defeated Raytheon and has been given the task of providing the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force with a close-to-air combat. The US Naval Air Systems Command, which led the AIM-9X program, chose Hughes’ proposal for a “rattlesnake” bidding scheme, which led to confusion and agitation. Both Hughes and Ray Thrane proposed their own solution, one based on a 127mm diameter cylindrical rachelor and one based on a larger diameter rocket motor to increase dynamic performance. Hughes can use the existing AIM-9 solid rocket motor with the 127mm projectile option. Hughes has teamed up with the British aerospace company to provide an improved advanced short-range air-to-air missiles, while Raytheon proposed AIM-9X program using Rappel’s “Monstrous 4” 162mm engine. Sources familiar with the competition were surprised by the decision. Some people think Hughes “rattlesnake” program obvious limitations of kinematic performance, but also choose this program can only be said to be a transitional party
