This paper discusses in detail the status and role of interleaver in Turbo codes, and two measures of interleaver, that is, the adaptability of distance spectrum and iterative decoding (IDS). The second standard IDS for the interleaver is given a detailed derivation and several IDSs for the common interleaver are given. The design of interleaver is discussed from the perspective of IDS.
