This article describes some of the properties of zirconium phosphate. It is a representative of very stable, synthetic inorganic ion exchangers that can be made into pellets suitable for column handling. It has an exchange capacity of up to ~ 5 meg / g in magnetic solution and shows the typical properties of a multifunctional weak acid cation exchanger. When the ratio of phosphate to zirconium is low, anions with anionic exchange properties are attached as the anion remains on the original zirconium salt structure. Cations can be rapidly and reversibly exchanged over the acid phosphate groups of the gel structure. The partition coefficients for alkali metals and alkaline earth metals have been determined. It has been shown to be available for separation applications; due to hydrolysis, the amount of exchange it decreases as the temperature increases. Its stability to water at up to 300 ° C illustrates water treatment and other aspects that can be used in high temperature systems.
