The tectonic analysis of the orogenic belts has evolved from a simple plate concept based on geosyncline theory to a more complex and rational model that seeks to address the interaction of microplates with separated terrains. The application of these new concepts to the interpretation of the Appalachian-Caledonian-Hercynian-Mauritania orogen is still in its infancy, with many different definitions and a series of conflicting topographies of the foundations. A Penrose Seminar on the orogenic belt of the Atlantic Ocean was held in Nova Scotia, Canada, from May 27 to June 2, 1985, as the organizational meeting for Item 233 of the International Geological Correlation Program (IGCP).
