目前宁夏自治区共有沙棘资源1.3万hm～2左右,其中天然沙棘 0.67万hm～2,人工种植沙棘0.67万hm～2,主要分布在六盘山区及固原地区各县,中宁、盐池两县也有分布.宁夏沙棘多呈片状分布在降雨量400mm,海拔1100m～2100m的黄土丘陵沟壑区的阳坡或半阳坡及沟谷、河道两岸,阴坡分布较少.沙棘树高一般为lm～3m,覆盖度在40%～50%,雌雄比例较低,一般为4:6.全区可利用沙棘面积较少,只有0.73万hm~～2,占总面积的60%.经科研人员测算,宁夏沙棘每公顷果实产量为115.5kg～1053kg,平均鲜果百粒重为136.5g,干重25.8g,每公顷平均产叶量760.5kg.近年来,宁夏自治区采用本地沙棘品种,结合流域治理和沙棘示范县的建设在宁夏南部山区大面积推广沙棘造林,起到了良好的生态效益和有限的经济效益.
