文化身份认同是美国华裔文学作品百年来不变的主题。从最初东西方文化碰撞下,放弃自我与母体文化,不顾一切争取白人主流文化的认同,到反思过后痛苦表达自身的声音,全然排斥主流文化影响的极端行为,美国华裔文学在痛苦中蜕变、成长,最终走到当前的全面繁荣时期。对文化身份的索求也演变成通过强调族裔文化的差异性,证明华裔构建具有间际性、包容性、多样性的独特华裔文化身份的可能。
