笔者认为和高等教育出版社2001年3月出版的旧教材《世界史(近代史编)》相比,新教材大幅压缩了篇幅,参考国外最新世界史教材以及其他许多专著,吸收了大量学术研究成果,引入了全球史观,新教材的编著水平有了显著进步。但是从21世纪的中国高校历史专业学生需要一部质量更高更完善的世界近代史教材来要求,从科学性、知识性和可读性的有机统一来衡量,新教材还存在一些可以改进之处。
