The Rolls-Royce has had valuable research experience on the three generations of ramjet engines used to face air-to-air missiles. The three generations of ramjet engines were the first two generations of the Royal Air Force, the third generation of the Royal Navy and development. By using these missiles in the armed forces overseas and in other countries, experience has been gained in the use and maintenance of missiles in tropical, arctic and marine environments. Rolls-Royce made more ramjet engines than any Western airline. This article details the steps taken in the design process to make the engine reliable and easy to maintain. The third-generation factory ramjet engine with liquid fuel pre-installed has progressed to the “Wooden round” state that requires only simple maintenance and inspection within five years. This article discusses the reliability of the active-shell projectile into the system for multiple actual firing of the ramjet engine and shows that it is comparable to a rocket propulsion system.
