古代小说创作由不自觉到充分自觉 ,是个漫长的发展过程 ,从魏晋到明清 ,不仅有大量笔记小说 ,也有大量介乎笔记与传奇之间的准传奇小说。明代以前的文言小说集数量甚夥 ,但因掺杂笔记体或准传奇体 ,没有产生一本个人纯传奇集 ,也没有产生一本全自创小说集。瞿佑的《剪灯新话》结束了小说这种“双无”的历史 ,并首开大写时事———重大现实题材的新风 ,社会性之强前所未有 ,显示出小说创作空前的艺术自觉。
