1936年6月,美国著名新闻记者埃德加·斯诺作为第一位西方记者,冲破重重封锁,由北京出发,途经西安,进入革命根据地——陕甘宁边区,进行了为期4个多月的新闻采访。他不仅采访了毛泽东、彭德怀、周恩来等红军高级将领,同时也采访了红军战士、农民、工人和知识分子。一年后,斯诺把在红区的采访通讯编著成《红星照耀中国》一书。1938年,该书中译本用了《西行漫记》这个书名。封面是一位英姿勃发的红军号兵迎着朝阳,吹奏前进的号角。从此,《西行漫记》流传到哪里,红军战士的军号就“吹”到哪里。抗日战争开始后,人们又把这帧照片称为《抗战之声》。
