农民一直试图用化学药品防治害虫。有时有效,有时无效。农民和科学家都知道,在农业上用化学药品,还有其他问题。用化学药品防治害虫、除草和施用化肥可使施用者得癌症和其他疾病,而且还会长期污染地下水源。最近,孟山都化学公司培育成一种不需要施用化学药品的植物。该公司要求农业研究局的政府科学家对该种植物进行试验。这种植物就是基因移植棉。孟山都公司的科学家们从苏云金杆菌中分离出基因,移植到普通棉花植株上,培育出这种基因移植植物。
Peasants have been trying to prevent pests with chemicals. Sometimes effective, sometimes invalid. Farmers and scientists know that there are other problems with using chemicals in agriculture. Controlling pests with chemicals, weeding and application of fertilizers can lead to cancer and other illnesses among users, but also cause long-term contamination of groundwater sources. Monsanto Chemical recently cultivated a plant that does not require chemicals. The company asked government scientists from the Agricultural Research Service to test the plant. This plant is genetically engineered cotton. Monsanto scientists have isolated the genes from Bacillus thuringiensis, transplanted them on common cotton plants and cultivated the gene-transplanted plants.
