院内感染严重影响患者的身体健康，单就英格兰每年用于该项的费用约1亿英镑左右。其中，住院患者用于院内感染的费用是未感染者的2．8倍，且住院时间比后者延长约2．5倍。在所有院内感染事件中，泌尿系感染约占23％，且为最常见的感染类型。造成此类感染的原因与导尿管使用密切相关，导尿管在体内时间越长，发病率越高。
