Ian Johnson, a Wall Street Journal reporter, wrote that despite the five-year austerity plan, many Chinese cities continued to invest heavily in real estate. Due to fewer buyers, many office buildings, restaurants and residential buildings are vacant. Real estate overdue housing prices, investment has stalled: last year’s real estate investment was 38.5 billion US dollars, the same as in 1996.
