Japan's private-sector business unexpectedly provided 5.2 billion yen in donations to the Japan Institute of Advanced International Studies (IIAS), greatly boosting the confidence of the Institute in its development as a leading research institute, according to the Science Policy Outlook. The goal of this institute is to raise 50 billion yen by 1994. The International Institute for Advanced Research is currently based in Kyoto, but it plans to move to the Kansai Cultural and Science City to be developed next year. The Institute's emphasis is on basic research, but it will also play a significant role in the development of the Kansai Science City in the 21st century. At present, there are only a few agencies in Kansai Science City. According to the Japanese government's plan, it will be built into a scientific and cultural center with a population of 400,000.
