Toshiba recently unveiled a series of 500KA and 750KA uninterruptible power supplies for data centers built with silicon carbide-based power devices. The G2020 Series operates at 98% efficiency and is said to be the highest operating efficiency in the double conversion UPS industry. Compared with the traditional uninterruptible power supply, G2020 series of new products generate heat, noise and interference smaller, lower cooling costs, but also more energy. Jesus Penalver, product manager for Toshiba’s Power Devices Division, said the future of power electronics lies in silicon carbide power switching, which offers 33% more junction temperature than traditional techniques, higher switching speeds, and very low switching loss. The G2020 series is 17% smaller than its predecessor, the G9000footprint, and is 57% smaller than the competition.
