The US Bureau of Mines is developing a new type of dewatering technology to facilitate the recovery of valuable iron from mill sludge. Laboratory tests show that the bottom blowing oxygen converter flue gas sludge can be dewatered to a moisture content of 12% by a plate-frame filter by means of acetone displacement. Since acetone can be recovered by distillation, the cost of the method is lower than that of the conventional thermal drying method. It is estimated that the additional energy consumption of the sludge acetone treatment, including the recovery of acetone, is about 5-7 dollars per dry residue.
