The IOC / ITSU-IX of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Pacific Tsunami Warning System was convened on March 13-17, 1984 at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, United States. 18 delegates from 9 countries and regions including Canada, Chile, China, Guatemala, Japan, New Zealand, the United States, the Soviet Union and Hong Kong, as well as 30 observers from Japan and the United States attended the meeting. IOC and its related organizations also attended the meeting. This is the first time that China has sent representatives to attend the conference since the first coordination group meeting in 1968. The earthquake tsunami is a major natural disaster on the Pacific Rim. As coastal populations grow, so do industrial and port facilities. The tsunami disaster losses are also more and more serious. To reduce this loss, the United States formed an earthquake and tsunami wave warning system at the Earthquake Observatory near Honolulu in 1948. In 1966, the IOC demanded that the United States establish the International Strategic Tsunami Information Center (ITIC) on the basis of the above-mentioned system of institutions. In the meantime, the IOC established the International Coordination Group (abbreviated ITSU) of the Pacific Tsunami Warning System. The coordination group sessions are held biennially. At present, participate in the coordination group of Pacific countries and places
