In this paper, we use the Chinese English learners’ colloquial corpus (SECCL) to study the relationship between temporal adverbs in English transitional language and the general past use. The results showed that the existence of temporal adverbials did not significantly affect the general past variation; however, different types of temporal adverbs had a significant effect on the variation of the general past tense, and different types of temporal adverbs had different effects on the general past tense The role of sequential temporal adverbial, positional temporal adverbial and contrasting temporal adverbials promote general past tense, while quantitative temporal adverbials have the impediment to the general past tense. This finding is basically consistent with the phased hypothesis and functional hypothesis of body development.
