《呼啸山庄》或许是文学作品中最为人熟知的地名,是我们在儿童时期就已经熟悉的,也是我们长大成人后仍然萦绕心头的地名。这个地名使人联想起旷野的荒凉景象——在那暗灰色的天空下,狂风肆虐,无情地摧残着大地。象这样的景色在文学作品中是没有人描写过的。由于作为《呼啸山庄》背景的哈渥斯荒原和勃朗特姐妹的传说总是不可磨灭地联系在一起,我们前往西约克郡时不可能不怀着一种对该处景色的遐想。在驱车穿越西区时,我才看出原来是这片广阔的旷野鼓励着勃朗特姐妹们写出《简·爱》、
Wuthering Heights is perhaps the best-known place name in literature, as we know it as a child, and is the place name we still haunt when we grow up. This place name is reminiscent of the desolation of the wilderness - under the dark gray sky, the wind raged and ruthlessly destroyed the earth. Such scenery in the literature is no one described. As the legend of the Haworth wilderness and the Bronte sisters, the backdrop of Wuthering Heights, is always indelibly linked, it is impossible not to have a reverie of the scenery of the area as we head for West Yorkshire.
