Although products that meet IEEE’s 2M bps 802.11 wireless LAN standard are just beginning to emerge, vendors are already working on faster devices. Two committees are working simultaneously to expand the 802.11 radio frequency standard to achieve 10Mbps Ethernet speeds in the 2.4GHz and 8.2GHz bands. Plans for 10Mbps standards in the 2.4GHz band are progressing faster and are expected to be finalized by the middle of this year, but the 8.2GHz band offers more potential for bandwidth improvements.
