The author used rabbit peritoneal macrophage conditioned medium (Mφ-CM) as a growth factor source to study the effect of macrophage-derived growth factor (MDGF) on proliferation of intimal smooth muscle cells (SMCs). Using flow cytometry and micro-spectrophotometer, they measured the DNA content of single SMC in the cell population, and observed their effect on the cell cycle progression of cultured smooth muscle cells by phase contrast microscopy.
