This article discusses the attempts by the state in the political economy of the contemporary world to use interdependence and the use of international institutions to obtain wealth and power. Both Marxists and realists agree that wealth and power are mutually reinforcing national goals. In the Western writings, power states call “hegemonies” the establishment of international institutions, including guidelines for judging government behavior, and make interdependence serve their interests.
