在意译成风的晚清译界,鲁迅、周作人兄弟却提出了“直译”主张。《域外小说集》通过对原著字、词、句及异质文明的忠实译介体现了该理念。他们以更新中国文学多元系统,填补“真空”进而重构国民性为旨归,在文本选择时偏重东北欧的弱国;还引入了在当时欧洲尚属先锋的文学体裁。但该译文集因其过于陌生的形式和“弱国小民”的民族身份定位超越了读者的期待视野,没有实现其文学价值。它却以“潜文本”的方式积蓄并整理了周氏兄弟的新文学理念。
In the translation of the late Qing translation style, Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren brothers have put forward “literal translation” proposition. The “Extraterritorial Fiction Collection” embodies this concept through its faithful translation of the original words, words, sentences and heterogeneous civilizations. They aimed at updating the pluralistic system of Chinese literature, filling in the “vacuum” and thus reconstructing the national character, emphasizing the weakness of northeast Europe in the choice of texts, and introducing a literary genre that was at the time avant-garde in Europe. However, due to its unfamiliar form and its national identity as a “weak country,” the translation has gone beyond the reader’s horizon of expectations and failed to realize its literary value. Instead, it has accumulated and sorted out the new literary ideas of the Zhou Brothers in the manner of “subtext”.
