The southeastern coast of mainland China south of Hangzhou Bay is mostly a twisting bedrock coast, and the headland and harbor are distinct features. The formation and mechanism of this harbor-like coast has always been one of the important topics in the study of coastal landscape. D.W. Johnson (1919) proposed the developmental pattern of a harbor coastline, believing that the coastline would gradually become linear due to the erosion of the headland and the filling of the gulf, eventually becoming the flattened coast where the alluvial and erosion areas alternated.
