我常常为我们这一代剧作家长年积累的巨大精神财富白白地耗费掉了而感到深深惋惜。世界上大概不会有比这更令人痛心、也更令人难以察觉的浪费了。20年前,我曾和一位美国作家在交谈中说过这样的话:“中国在科技上和经济上落后,但在文化上却不能说我们也落后。在悠久而精美的文化熏陶和养育下,中国作家的文化修养应该说是很高的。在艺术的想象力、感受力和表现力方面,中国作家也绝不比外国同行差。至于中国作家生活经历的丰富和坎坷,他们对人生对社会思考的深刻,以及由此而产生的内心感情和愿望之强烈,恐怕都是当代外国作家所无法比拟的。
I am deeply sorry for the tremendous spiritual wealth that our generation of dramatists have accumulated over the years. There probably will not be any more distressing or even unreadable wastes in the world. Twenty years ago, I spoke to an American writer about this: "China is technologically and economically backward but culturally we can not say we are backward. Under the long and beautiful culture and nurturing Chinese writers should be said to have a very good cultural accomplishment.Chinese writers are by no means inferior to foreign counterparts in the art of imagination, feeling and expressiveness.As for the rich and rough life experience of Chinese writers, The deep thinking, and the strong inner feelings and aspirations that result from it, are probably unmatched by contemporary foreign writers.
